Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg has died at age 87.
Ginsburg died Friday at her home in Washington, D.C., after a battle with metastatic pancreatic cancer. She had already survived five previous bouts with various types of cancer.
Appointed by President Bill Clinton in 1993, Ginsburg was the second female Justice and became a feminist icon. Early in her career, she had trouble finding a job and was fired when she became pregnant with her first child. As attitudes and opportunities changed through the years, her career grew to match her ambitions, eventually landing her on the U.S. Court of Appeals and later the Supreme Court. Her grit and brilliance became legendary, as did her improbable, charming friendship with fellow Justice and ideological opposite, the late Antonin Scalia.
According to the Supreme Court’s press release, Ginsburg’s family was by her side in her last moments. She was predeceased by her husband of 56 years, Martin Ginsburg, in 2010. She is survived by two children, several grandchildren and one great grandchild. Ginsburg will be buried in a private service at Arlington National Cemetery.
