A young student was removed from class for sporting the Gadsden Flag, which school officials falsely claimed was linked to slavery.
Footage out of Colorado Springs, Colorado, shows 12-year-old Jaiden in a meeting with his mom and a Vanguard School director, who told them the familiar “Don’t Tread on Me” yellow patch featuring a coiled snake affixed to his backpack had “origins with slavery” and violates school guidelines.
In the video, Jaiden’s mom tries to explain the flag symbol has no ties to slavery and was actually meant as a defiant message from colonists to the British during the Revolutionary War.
“Yeah it has nothing to do with slavery, that’s the Revolutionary War patch. That was displayed when they were fighting the British…Maybe you’re thinking of the Confederate flag?” the mom told the administrator, who responded, “I’m here to enforce the policy that was provided by the district and you have every right to not agree with it.”
The incident caught the attention of Republican Colorado Gov. Jared Polis, who weighed in with a history lesson explaining the “Gadsden flag is a proud symbol of the American revolution and a iconic warning to Britain or any government not to violate the liberties of Americans.”
“It appears on popular American medallions and challenge coins through today and Ben Franklin also adopted it to symbolize the union of the 13 colonies. It’s a great teaching moment for a history lesson!”
Accused of using ChatGPT to craft his response, Gov. Polis took the opportunity to consult the AI writing bot on the origins of the flag, which confirmed the design “symbolizes the American colonies’ resistance to British oppression and their readiness to defend their rights and liberties.”
While the flag’s history is well-established, School Director Jeff Yocum in an internal email cited several mainstream media articles claiming the flag was tied to the “patriot” movement and “hate groups.”
Furthermore, the policy Jaiden’s accused of violating says nothing about banning flags with historical context.
So what rule was he actually breaking? According to the director, this one (see highlight).
Though it’s unclear what alleged slavery connections have to do with drugs, tobacco, alcohol, or weapons. pic.twitter.com/KohiU4X0jz

Journalist and author Connor Boyack reports Jaiden next attempted to get his his incredible story covered by a local NBC affiliate, but was denied an interview.
As you can hear his mom say in the video, Jaiden wanted to stand up for his (non-racist!) beliefs. So after he was kicked out of class, he asked his mom to take him to the news station to get the word out.
(He got the idea from a @tuttletwins book 💪🏽)

We’ll see how this shakes out for The Vanguard School as Jaiden’s story continues to attract attention and piss off patriots nationwide.
