A police officer was seriously injured when a male suspect wielding a hammer attacked her in Connecticut over the weekend, authorities say.
The shocking incident unfolded at around 6:30 a.m. on Saturday in Middletown, approximately 15 miles south of Hartford.
Middletown Police received a call about a man “yelling and smashing objects” at an address officers had already visited three times in the past week, according to a warrant reviewed by The Middletown Press.
Body cam footage of the harrowing confrontation was released on Tuesday by the Office of the Inspector General.
Detective Karli Travis approaches the home and observes a man identified as 52-year-old Winston Tate standing in the driveway holding a hammer, footage shows.
“Can you put that down, please?” Travis requests multiple times.
“No,” Tate responds, before suddenly charging at Travis and knocking her to the ground.
After Travis falls, she discharges her firearm, striking Tate at least once, authorities say.
Travis strikes Tate multiple times with the hammer, footage appears to show.
The suspect only relented when a witness began shouting from his property, according to the warrant.
Tate reportedly ignored commands from arriving officers and walked back into the home.
“Since the detective and Tate appeared to be covered in blood, officers surrounded the home and eventually made entry since they assumed he had been shot and could be dead or dying, according to the warrant,” The Middletown Press reports.
“He was taken into custody as he tried to make his way out of the house, the warrant said. He had several injuries that appeared to be gunshot wounds, according to the warrant.”
Tate was treated at hospital for gunshot wounds before appearing in court on Tuesday.
He was charged with attempted first-degree assault, second-degree assault, interfering with police, and assault on a police officer and reportedly ordered held on more than $1 million in bonds after charges in four other cases were brought.
Detective Travis suffered injuries from the hammer strikes and also shot the webbing between her fingers during the altercation.
An investigation and legal proceedings are ongoing.
Infowars has been reporting on the surge of crime in many U.S. cities.
It seems inconceivable to me that a nation of 300 million cannot replace 545 people who stand convicted – by present facts – of incompetence and irresponsibility.
