President Donald Trump’s campaign released a new attack ad this week slamming prospective GOP opponent Ron DeSantis as disloyal, as the Florida governor continues to tease a presidential bid.
The ad, which was shared on Trump War Room social media channels, points out DeSantis would not have attained the governorship without Trump’s help in the 2018 gubernatorial election.
“Ron DeSantis was struggling big time in his primary race for governor of Florida,” the ad highlights, adding, “Polls revealed DeSantis was failing so bad, he was losing by a staggering 17 points.”
“Then, DeSantis was saved by the endorsement of President Trump. Trump’s support was so powerful just two days after the endorsement DeSantis took a commanding lead and it propelled him to being elected governor.”
The ad then cuts to footage of DeSantis’ victory speech, where he thanked Trump for standing by him “when it wasn’t necessarily the smart thing to do.”
“You’re welcome, Ron,” a voiceover says.
“Unfortunately,” the ad continues, “instead of being grateful, DeSantis is now attacking the very man who saved his career.”
“Isn’t time DeSantis remembers how he got to where he is?” the ad says, cutting to several clips of the Florida gov. when he was a strong ally of the former president.
“Truth is, there’s only one person who can make America great — again!” the ad states, referring to the former president.
The latest ad comes on the heels of another brutal attack ad unleashed by the Trump campaign earlier this month which blasted the Florida governor’s position on entitlement cuts, while also mocking his reportedly awkward pudding-eating habits.
Despite the savage nature of the ads, DeSantis’ consistent failure to respond has left many wondering whether he will ever counter Trump’s attacks, or indeed whether he will even run for president.
On top of recently visiting Iowa and Israel, the Florida governor made another ambiguous move this week with “sources close to his campaign” telling mainstream media outlets he was forming a presidential exploratory committee and could announce his presidential bid as early as May.
As the 2024 presidential election looms, it remains to be seen if DeSantis bends the knee and kisses the ring, or whether Trump will have to add him to his list of defeated opponents.
