In the words of The Anchorman, Ron Burgundy: “Well that escalated quickly!” All eyes have been on the state of Virginia recently. Last week, the Democrat Governor of Virginia, Ralph Northam, admitted, then recanted, then admitted again to wearing blackface in the 1980’s. It was a very odd revelation that ended with the world learning about the governor’s ability to moonwalk. Just as Democrats were feeling the heat subsiding over the episode, things blew up again. The Virginia Attorney General, Mark Herring, admitted that he had worn blackface, as well, during the 1980’s. That makes two Democrats that have admitted as much this month. He tried to lessen the sting of the past by referring to wearing blackface as “brown makeup” instead. Herring is second in line for the governorship behind Lt. Governor Justin Fairfax. It appears that the 1980’s were a difficult time for Virginia Democrats.
Herring Previously Called for Northam to Resign
In a stunning act of hypocrisy, Herring called for Governor Northam to resign amid the turmoil surrounding the photo surfacing of him in blackface. “It is no longer possible for Governor Northam to lead our Commonwealth and it is time for him to step down,” Herring stated on Saturday. Don’t miss the rub here. He made this statement and condemnation knowing full well of his own guilt for the same crime. Talk about ballsy. Additionally, Herring said, “I have spoken with Lieutenant Governor Fairfax and assured him that, should he ascend to the governorship, he will have my complete support and and commitment to ensuring his success and the success of our Commonwealth.” Unfortunately for Democrats, there’s a problem there too.
All Three Top Democrats in Virginia are in Trouble
The issues with Northam and Herring are now in full, national display. However, there is another issue looming for Virginia Democrats. Virginia Lt. Governor, Justin Fairfax, is under heat of his own. Fairfax is accused of sexual assault from an encounter with professor Vanessa Tyson in 2004. Fairfax does not deny that the sexual encounter took place, but rather denies it being non-consensual. The accuser, a self-proclaimed “proud Democrat” first began telling friends/family of the alleged assault in late-2017. Fairfax responded, “I wish her no harm or humiliation, nor do I seek to denigrate her or diminish her voice, but I cannot agree with a description of events that I know is not true.” It will severely test the “believe all women” battle-cry that the left has become known for. If they hold Fairfax to the same standard as Judge Brett Kavanaugh, they will call for his resignation as well.
This presents quite the conundrum for the Virginia Democrat party. All three of their top elected officials are facing the very real prospect of either being removed from office or being forced to resign in shame. This would open the door for the Governor’s role to fall on the shoulders of Republican Kirk Cox, the Speaker of the House. He currently sits as the third in line for that position behind Fairfax and Herring. That loss in governorship would be a devastating blow to the Democrat’s cause in Virginia.
Democrats seem to have a real problem on their hands. Their words ring out that the Republican party is the party of “racism and division.” However, the actions of their own Democrat members tell a very different story. It is a disturbing trend that the people of Virginia, and America, hope ends quickly.
