It’s a case that has gripped North Alabama for more than five years – the 2018 on-duty shooting of an armed suicidal man by a Huntsville Police Department officer. The district attorney prosecuting the case called the shooting “unjustified.” William “Ben” Darby was convicted in 2021 for the murder of Jeffery Parker. He served over a year of a 25-year sentence in state prisons, including time at Limestone Correctional Facility. Earlier this year, the Alabama Court of Criminal Appeals overturned his conviction. The court found the trial judge should have instructed the jury to consider the reasonableness of Darby’s use of deadly force. Ben Darby’s wife, police officer Keelin Darby joined me a year ago to discuss the case and is back with us today for an update to this sad story.
