A resident of Maui has come forward with startling allegations claiming police on the island prevented people from evacuating when the recent wildfires were raging through town.

The Maui native known as “Fish” says he went to investigate what was causing a long line of immobile cars to form as people attempted to evacuate.

“So I went around back to Front Street and all the cars were lined up but none of them were moving,” Fish described in an interview. “And I walked all the way from Safeway to the Chart House – not one car has moved, and I was wondering what was stopping the traffic. Well, it was a policeman. And I got to the end and I looked up north. There were no obstructions. There was no reason to keep those cars there.”

“Are you serious?” asked a man conducting the interview.

“I’m serious as a heart attack,” Fish confirmed. “And I said, ‘What are you doing?’ he goes, ‘Well, I’m under orders to keep them here.’ And I said, ‘The fire is right around Safeway. It’s gonna hit Front Street. You know? These people gotta get outta here!’ And he’s like, ‘I’m following orders.’”

“And I keep walking down the highway and I look behind. No cars are coming out. I walked all the way to [the] beach. Still no cars coming out and I start hearing boom boom boom and then I heard people screaming and stuff.”

“You’re saying they were blockaded in by the police at the end of Front Street?” the interviewer asked.

“Yes,” Fish nodded.

The man says he returned to his property north of the area and later learned about the utter devastation wrought by the fire the next day.

The man’s incredible testimony adds to claims the government of Lahaina failed on multiple fronts to save people from the devastating blaze that destroyed the town.

Hawaii’s Democrat Governor Josh Green also announced Monday his administration is looking into acquiring the properties destroyed by the fires, adding to suspicions authorities let the fires burn possibly as part of some nefarious land grab scheme.

“I’m already thinking of ways for the state to acquire that land so that we can put it into workforce housing, to put it back into families, or make it open spaces in perpetuity as a memorial to the people who were lost,” Green said while standing amongst the rubble.

If Fish’s claims are true, they raise the question: why were police preventing people from escaping the inferno that’s left dozens dead?
