An “unhinged man” with a long list of arrests died while being restrained by passengers in the New York City subway, according to reports. 

The harrowing incident unfolded at around 2:30 p.m. on Monday afternoon in Manhattan. 

A “vagrant” suddenly stormed into a subway car began threatening riders, witnesses say. 

“He started screaming in an aggressive manner,” Juan Vazquez, a freelance journalist who captured the ensuing altercation on video, told the New York Post. 

“He said he had no food, he had no drink, that he was tired and doesn’t care if he goes to jail. He started screaming all these things, took off his jacket, a black jacket that he had, and threw it on the ground.”

A male straphanger, identified as a 24-year-old former U.S. Marine, approached the vagrant from behind and put him in a rear chokehold as other passengers helped control the crazed man, video shows.

During a lengthy scuffle, the man lost consciousness, at which time he was reportedly released.

Emergency responders were unable to revive him and he was pronounced dead at the scene.

He was later identified as Jordan Neely, a 30-year-old homeless man “who was living on the streets and had a history of mental health issues,” according to The Post.

“He had numerous prior arrests for offenses including assault, disorderly conduct, and fare beating, law enforcement sources said.”

The Marine was taken in for questioning, but later released without charges.

Vazquez says the tragedy could have been avoided if cops had responded sooner, but reports indicate it took them more than 15 minutes to arrive.

“This would never have happened if the police had shown up within five minutes,” he said. “Then we’d be talking about a true hero. It’s complicated.”

“None of us who were there thought he was in danger of dying. We thought he just passed out or ran out of air.”
