Two illegal aliens from Cuba were apprehended after they landed a powered hang glider at an international airport in the Florida Keys over the weekend, authorities say.
The wild incident unfolded at around 10:30 a.m. on Saturday morning in Key West.
The runway at Key West International Airport was briefly closed when two men crash-landed an ultralight aircraft they had flown from Cuba.
“Two Cuban migrants landed at Key West International Airport on a motorized hang glider at approximately 10:30 a.m. Saturday,” the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office (MCSO) explained in a statement.
“Both were turned over to the custody of the U.S. Border Patrol.”
MCSO and Border Patrol both published photographs of the craft, which likely traveled at least 90 nautical miles to make the journey.
No serious injuries were reported.
While migrants arriving to Florida from Cuba by air is an extremely rare event, nearly 10,000 illegal migrants have been interdicted in Florida waters since August.
In January, Florida Governor Ron DeSantis declared a state of emergency due to the number of illegal aliens reaching his state by sea.
