Five students were hospitalized on Wednesday afternoon after ingesting what California authorities believe to be marijuana gummies at a school in Sun Valley, according to the Los Angeles Fire Department.
The incident was reported at 1:20 p.m. on Wednesday at the Sun Valley Magnet School site, where eight kids showed symptoms of “sudden illness” after eating “gummies,” according to the LAFD. The kids, all between the ages of 12 and 16, were still conscious and breathing when help arrived.
Five of them were hospitalized while the other three got released to their respective families, officials said.
“Though all eight patients were discovered upon the campus of Sun Valley Magnet School, a confirmation of how each may be affiliated with the campus remains a matter for LAUSD officials,” added Brian Humphrey, LAFD spokesperson.
The consumption of marijuana and derivative products, like gummies and edibles, has been widely available in California since its legalization in 2016 with the enactment of Proposition 64. Recent reports published in January have shown that the intoxication of marijuana products in kids, primarily toddlers, has risen from 2017 to 2021, with at least 7,043 cases of exposure reported, according to the American Academy of Pediatrics.
“In 2017, there were 207 reported cases, and in 2021 there were 3054 cases, an increase of 1375.0%,” according to the AAP. “Two-year-old patients accounted for the largest number of cases of all ages at 27.7%, followed closely by 3-year-old patients (24.6%).”
“There has been a consistent increase in pediatric edible cannabis exposures over the past 5 years, with the potential for significant toxicity,” the report concluded.
