Democratic Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer characterized mass shootings as a “uniquely American” issue Tuesday, vowing action after a deadly Monday night mass shooting at Michigan State University.
A 43-year-old gunman killed three students and injured five others before fatally shooting himself, police reported. Whitmer argued at a Tuesday press conference including Democratic Michigan Rep. Elissa Slotkin that this was an example of a “uniquely American problem.”
“As parents, we tell our kids, ‘It’s gonna be ok.’ We say that all the time. But the truth is words are not good enough. We must act and we will,” Whitmer said.

“Today is the fifth anniversary of the Parkland shooting,” Whitmer said. “We’re mere weeks past the Lunar New Year at a dance hall and a few months past a shooting at an elementary school in Uvalde. And looking back at a year marked by shootings at grocery stores, parades and so many other ordinary, everyday situations, we cannot keep living like this.”
Whitmer called for universal background checks for gun purchases, safe firearm storage laws and extreme risk protection orders to keep guns away from potentially dangerous people in her January State of the State Address. She said she was “not talking about law-abiding citizens,” claiming hunters and responsible gun owners of both parties knew her proposals were necessary.
Whitmer’s office did not immediately respond to the Daily Caller News Foundation’s request for comment.
