A Memphis Police Officer arrested in connection with the death of Tyre Nichols sent text messages to at least five individuals of photographs he took of Nichols after he was beaten by officers Jan. 7, according to MPD documents released Tuesday.

Demetrius Haley admitted to taking two photos of the injured individual, who was severely beaten repeatedly by the officers. Haley sent one photo to a “civilian” employee, two officers and a female friend of Haley’s, the documents show, and a sixth individual was detected who also received the photo, according to MPD.

Nichols, who was initially stopped at a traffic light for reckless driving, ran from the scene, and was tracked down at another location, died three days later in the hospital.

MPD officials said the officers’ actions were “blatantly unprofessional” and that they were laughing and boasting about the situation, The New York Times reported.

The documents indicate that Haley was the first officer on the scene when the incident began, and he was the officer who pulled Nichols from his car at the traffic stop, at which point he pepper sprayed him.

The death of Nichols has sparked national attention, sparking protests and riots across the U.S. So far, five police officers have been charged with second-degree murder in connection with his death.
