Back in May, we reported on the DUI arrest of Paul Pelosi, the longtime husband of Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi (D-CA). Now, some shocking new details have emerged about the 82 year-old’s arrest.

Court documents that were just obtained by The New York Post state that Paul was slurring his words and appeared unsteady on his feet to police officers in the minutes after he injured another driver in Napa on May 28. He also smelled of alcohol and failed his sobriety test.

Paul, who is set to be arraigned later today on two DUI charges related to the crash, was on his way home from a dinner party when his Porsche allegedly struck an SUV. Officers with the California Highway Patrol arrived on the scene at around 10pm, and they immediately saw that Paul, who was sitting in the drivers seat of his vehicle, seemed to be drunk.

“His eyes appears red/watery, he was unsteady on his feet, his speech was slurred, and he had a strong odor of an alcoholic beverage emanating from his breath,” officers said in the complaint.

Fox News reported that when asked for his ID, Paul handed officers both his driver’s license and a “11-99 Foundation” card, which is a police courtesy card. This foundation is a California Highway Patrol charity that supports officers and gives their children scholarships.

The court documents also say that Paul had a drug in his system at the time of his arrest, though it is unclear what this drug was.

“I believe that the drug reference is part of the statutory boilerplate language in the complaint,” claimed Amanda Bevins, Paul’s lawyer.

The driver of the SUV, who is only identified as John Doe in the court papers, was standing outside of his vehicle when officers got to the scene. Though he declined medical attention at the scene, he contacted investigators five days after the crash to say that he was suffering “pain to his upper right arm, right shoulder and neck,” and was also having trouble lifting things. He also claimed to be suffering from headaches that he did not have before the crash.

The complaint states that Paul’s Porsche and the other driver’s SUV suffered “major collision damage.” Officers found that Paul, whose blood alcohol content was at .082%, was the cause of the crash. Paul is not planning to attend today’s arraignment, and he will instead be represented by Bevins. Paul was reportedly bailed out the morning after the crash for $5,000.

This comes as Paul’s wife Nancy is leading a delegation of Democratic lawmakers on visit to Taiwan.  Nancy, who has long claimed to not drink alcohol, has refused to comment on her husband’s arrest in the months since it’s happened.  Paul and Nancy have been married since 1962, and they are the parents of five children.

Fox News host Jesse Watters claimed last night that Paul’s trial is “rigged” and corrupted by “deck-stacking” after a last-minute judge swap on Tuesday. The judge stepped down at the last minute last night, and was replaced by Judge Monique Langhorne, who Watters said is a registered Democrat.

“This is totally deck-stacking if I’ve ever seen it,” Watters said. “How can we expect a fair trial here when the judge and the prosecutors are all politically on the same side as the defendant, [and] financially connected? There’s a family connection we’ve told you about, too. Can you say rigged?”

“Look, we get it. Paul’s married to a California bigwig,” he continued. “He and Nancy are Golden State royalty, but they shouldn’t get a free pass.”

It remains to be seen how Paul’s trial will play out.
