Gov. Ron DeSantis stated on Friday that Republicans have surpassed Democrats in voter registration.

Tampa Bay Times reports: “Today for the first time in the history of Florida we’ve now overtaken Democrats,” DeSantis said to applause, then joking that Republicans would have won the New Jersey governor’s race if all the Republicans hadn’t moved to Florida.

The most recent voter registration data available to the public in Florida are from August and indicate Democrats outweigh Republicans by just over 24,000 people.

The Division of Elections in Florida only has data on voter registration through August of this year. State parties, on the other hand, frequently have more recent data than what is made public, sifting through it weekly from each county.

According to Politico, DeSantis has contributed $2 million to the party’s voter registration drive.

In 2008, Florida Democrats held a roughly 700,000 voter edge over registered Republicans, thanks to former President Barack Obama’s campaign and popularity.

Since 2012, however, the difference between registered Democrats and Republicans has shrunk every year. Democrats only had roughly 24,000 more registered voters as of September.

Helen Aguirre Ferré, executive director of the Republican Party of Florida, said on Friday that the governor’s actions had pushed people to the party. She has previously stated that Democratic message has pushed voters to the Republican Party, particularly Hispanic and Latino voters who are concerned about socialism.

The amount of passion for registering Republicans has never been seen before, and this is a truly watershed moment in Florida’s history, Ferré added.

Manny Diaz, the Florida Democratic Party’s leader, has promised to expand the party’s voter registration efforts. Republicans, on the other hand, aren’t showing any indications of slowing down their efforts. According to Politico, DeSantis invested $2 million in the state GOP’s voter registration drive in September.
