Four migrants are facing charges for attacking Coast Guard personnel during an illegal entry of U.S. waters in the Caribbean Sea last month, according to authorities.
The incident unfolded on May 30 approximately 17 nautical miles northwest of Aguadilla, a city on Puerto Rico’s northwestern coast.
A Coast Guard Cutter approached a vessel carrying 29 illegal migrants of “unknown nationalities,” Customs and Border Protection (CBP) explained in a press release.
“The Coast Guard crew approached the vessel and reported that the four defendants were making threatening gestures, wielding machetes, and attempting to assault personnel by throwing objects.”
Guardsmen alerted CBP and Air and Marine Operations agents were dispatched to the scene, where they arrested four men – three from the Dominican Republic and one from Haiti.
The suspects were brought to Aguadilla where they were taken into custody and processed by Border Patrol agents at Ramey Station.
“Alfredo Rodriguez-Moya, 23; Johan Jerber-Jaramillo, 22; Francisco Santos-Cedeño, 36; and Jean Enus Demosthene, 43; will appear today before US Magistrate Judge Marshal Morgan charged with violating Title 8 U.S.C. § 1325, attempted improper entry; Title 18 U.S.C. § 2237, failure to heave; and Title 18 U.S.C. § 111, assaulting, resisting, or impeding certain officers or employees,” CBP announced.
U.S. authorities were notified that a court in the Dominican Republic had issued a warrant for Jerber-Jaramillo, who is suspected of being involved in a murder in his home country.
An investigation is ongoing.
