Ron DeSantis claims he’s the only viable Republican candidate in the 2024 presidential race.
Despite not yet formally announcing a presidential bid, the Florida governor who was at one time endorsed by Donald Trump reportedly made the remarks in a recent call with donors, where he downplayed the former president’s electability.
“You have basically three people at this point that are credible in this whole thing,” DeSantis said according to the New York Times, adding, “Biden, Trump and me.”
“And I think of those three,” he continued, “two have a chance to get elected president — Biden and me, based on all the data in the swing states, which is not great for the former president and probably insurmountable because people aren’t going to change their view of him.”
DeSantis’ cavalier comments come amid reports a presidential announcement is soon forthcoming.
President Donald Trump, meanwhile, responded to news of DeSantis’ comments on Truth Social, writing, “Sorry, but Ron DeSanctimonious is UNELECTABLE, and everyone knows why. I’m leading Biden by 11 Points. RAN TWICE, WON TWICE, AND DID MUCH BETTER THE SECOND TIME (ELECTION WAS RIGGED!). MAKE AMERICA GREAT AGAIN!”
Countering DeSantis’ claims, the former president also shared recent polls showing he has a 7-point lead over Democrat opponent Joe Biden, whereas DeSantis is predicted to tie Biden.
Over the past few weeks, Trump’s campaign team has been preparing for DeSantis to throw his hat in the ring.
Last month, they released an attack ad slamming DeSantis as disloyal, arguing he wouldn’t have been elected governor without the former president’s vote-boosting endorsement.
Will this be the worst move of Ron DeSantis’ political career, or is it possible he has something else up his sleeve?
