San Francisco Mayor London Breed secured $25 million in funding for police overtime pay Tuesday, years after cutting the city’s police budget, according to the San Francisco Chronicle.
Breed introduced a $27.6 million police budget supplemental on Feb. 18 to help fund police overtime, but she ultimately decreased the proposal’s total, the outlet reported. The San Francisco Board of Supervisors approved the $25 million police overtime measure by a 9 to 2 margin Tuesday, with three board members co-sponsoring it.
“Public safety is the number one issue I hear about from residents and small businesses every day,” Breed said Tuesday. Motor vehicle theft, robbery and larceny theft incidents rose by about 4%, 8.5% and 11.9% in San Francisco last year compared to 2021, contributing to a roughly 6% overall surge in serious crime incidents, SFPD data shows.
Breed had lowered the San Francisco Police Department (SFPD), sheriff, district attorney and juvenile probation departments’ budgets by about $60 million in 2020, and the SFPD currently has 700 fewer full-duty officers than recommended, according to the Chronicle. San Francisco District Attorney Brooke Jenkins and SFPD Chief Bill Scott attended a March 7 press conference where the mayor promoted the new supplemental, according to The San Francisco Standard.
“This funding will allow operations to continue uninterrupted, and is critical to maintaining public safety,” co-sponsoring San Francisco Supervisor Rafael Mandelman said Tuesday.
