Voters prefer Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis over former-President Donald Trump for the 2024 presidential election, according to a new poll.
The poll, conducted following the midterm elections, shows that 23% of voters prefer DeSantis while 20% said they preferred Trump. The shift highlights a reverse of pre-midterm polling where Trump led DeSantis in voters’ opinions, according to Axios.
Trump took a jab at DeSantis last week, labeling him “Ron DeSanctimonious” ahead of the midterms after many began to allude to DeSantis as the 2024 Republican party leader. DeSantis has not formally announced any intent to run, but he is viewed as Trump’s main challenger.
“The Fake News asks him if he’s going to run if President Trump runs, and he says, ‘I’m only focused on the Governor’s race, I’m not looking into the future,’” Trump said in a statement, according to Axios. “Well, in terms of loyalty and class, that’s really not the right answer.”
NEW: More Republicans and Republican-leaning Independents now say they’d prefer DeSantis (42%) as their 2024 presidential nominee over Trump than say they’d prefer Trump to DeSantis (35%). As Trump continues to clash with DeSantis, 41% of voters reported that neither DeSantis nor Trump would be a good candidate as the Republican nominee, according to the poll. Within the Republican demographic, 41% prefer DeSantis, 39% prefer Trump and 8% said neither candidate is preferred.
Trump began to distance himself from DeSantis during the midterms, as whispers of DeSantis running in 2024 began to circulate. Following the elections, Trump came under fire for his 400 endorsements, as many underperformed, according to Axios.
The New York Times’ Maggie Haberman tweeted that Trump blamed “everyone who advised him to back Oz,” citingpeople close to the former president. He also blamed his wife after she expressed her “fondness” for the candidate.
“When I endorsed him, it was as though, to use a bad term, a nuclear weapon went off,” he continued. “I also fixed his campaign, which had completely fallen apart, and now, Ron DeSanctimonious is playing games!” Trump said, accordingto Axios.
The poll was conducted from Nov. 9 to Nov. 11 with 1,500 respondents and has a margin of error of 2.7%.
