North Carolina Rep. Ted Budd won his Senate race against Democratic former state Chief Justice Cheri Beasley Tuesday, NBC News and Politico projected, holding the seat for Republicans.

Budd will take over for retiring three-term Republican Sen. Richard Burr. He was first elected to the House in 2017 and led Beasley by six points in Nov. 4 to 6 Trafalgar Group poll.

Former President Donald Trump endorsed Budd before his primary victory in May, CNN reported. In their Oct. 8 debate, Budd accused Beasley of supporting police defunding, not treating criminals harshly enough during her judicial career and supporting abortion until the moment before birth, according to North Carolina Public Radio.

Beasley denied wanting to defund law enforcement and pledged to push for Roe v. Wade becoming “the law of the land,” the outlet reported. “I will support the parameters outlined in Roe vs. Wade, which provide for protections and restrictions on abortion later in pregnancy and allow them only in the most severe cases,” she said.

Beasley charged Budd during the debate with failing to support Capitol Police officers on Jan. 6, according to NCPR. He had called Jan. 6 “a bad day for America”, but also once referenced events that day as “just patriots standing up,” Spectrum News 1 reported.
