The House impeachment inquiry into President Joe Biden may converge with the Justice Department investigation into Biden’s alleged mishandling of classified information before becoming president.

The House Oversight and Accountability Committee—one of three committees looking into whether Biden used his power as vice president to assist his family’s influence peddling—this week is seeking information from special counsel Robert Hur, who has been investigating Biden’s alleged mishandling of classified documents during his eight years as vice president and 36 years as senator representing Delaware.

Specifically, Oversight Chairman James Comer, R-Ky., wants to know of any documents related to countries where members of the Biden family raked in millions from supposed overseas business transactions.

“Evidence suggests President Biden may have used certain members of his family—particularly his son, Hunter Biden—to accumulate millions of dollars from foreign individuals and entities for the benefit of his family and himself,” Comer said in a letter to Hur dated Monday.

Comer raised the prospect that classified documents found in Biden’s possession may include sensitive information related to specific countries where his son Hunter, brother James, and other relatives benefited financially from business deals, including China, Russia, Ukraine, Kazakhstan, and Romania.

“Indeed, the Biden family received millions of dollars from foreign sources while President Biden served in public office and afterwards,” Comer’s letter to Hur continues. “If any of the classified documents mishandled by President Biden involved countries or individuals that had financial dealings with Biden family members or their related companies, the committee needs access to that information to evaluate whether our national security has been compromised.”

The Comer letter to the special counsel comes a week after news that Hur had interviewed Biden about classified documents found in his possession at multiple locations. Hur’s team reportedly has interviewed more than 100 individuals as part of the probe.

The House Ways and Means Committee—another one of the three committees involved in the impeachment inquiry—identified more than 20 countries linked to the Biden family’s alleged influence peddling schemes.

Comer’s Oversight Committee released information that suggested the White House and the president’s attorney made misleading statements about the discovery of classified materials in Biden’s offices at the Penn Biden Center for Global Engagement, located in the nation’s capital. The oversight panel found that at least five White House employees were involved in coordinating and removing boxes of documents from the Penn Biden Center from March 2021 through October 2022.

“President Biden’s retention of certain classified documents begs the question as to why he kept these particular materials,” Comer wrote to Hur. “Of the many classified documents he reviewed over his lengthy career, why did President Biden keep these specific documents in his home and office? The sensitive nature of the information contained in the documents may answer that question for the committee, which is why we seek to review those materials.”

“The committee seeks to further understand why President Biden retained certain classified documents, if such information related to any of his family’s foreign business interactions, and why so many White House officials were involved in obtaining these materials,” the letter adds.

A White House spokesperson did not reply to The Daily Signal’s inquiries for this report. The Justice Department, which appointed Hur as special counsel, also did not respond.
