CV NEWS FEED // Democratic Massachusetts Gov. Maura Healy this week said her state has reached capacity in sheltering its unprecedented number of illegal immigrants.

“I want to assure you that we will continue to engage, assess, and serve every family who appeals for help as best we can,” she said during a Monday press conference.

Healy added that the state is “entering a new phase of this challenge” and “can no longer guarantee shelter placement for families who are sent here.”

Like New York City, Massachusetts has a “Right to Shelter” mandate which applies both to migrants and to homeless American citizens. The governor clarified that her administration has no intention of ending this obligation.

“We are being very clear, though, that we are not going to be able to guarantee placement for folks who are sent here after the end of this month,” she said.

The Daily Wire’s Mairead Elordi reported Thursday:

Massachusetts’ shelter system is currently housing about 23,000 people, including nearly 7,000 families, according to officials. The system can house a total of 24,000 people or 7,500 families, and officials estimate it will reach capacity by the end of October.

Elordi added that back in August, “Healey declared a state of emergency over the migrant issue and activated 250 state National Guard members to aid shelters and hotels that are housing migrants.”

Healy is a past supporter of unrestricted immigration and critic of border enforcement. In 2017, when Healy was serving as the attorney general of Massachusetts, she rebuked the administration of then-President Donald Trump over its decision to withdraw federal funding to “sanctuary cities.”

“The President’s executive order is an irresponsible attempt to coerce our communities into conducting his mass deportations, and would impact all residents by stripping federal funding for roads, schools, police, health care, the elderly, and assistance for those in need,” Healy said at the time.

Healy joins several other blue-state Democrats who have during the present border crisis dramatically reversed course after long championing lax migration policies.

The growing list of new immigration control supporters includes New York City Mayor Eric Adams and New York Governor Kathy Hochul.
