CNN chief national correspondent John King fretted about “democracy” Wednesday when discussing an interaction between Republican Rep. Virginia Foxx of North Carolina and a reporter.
Foxx, 80, told ABC congressional correspondent Rachel Scott to “shut up” after Scott asked Republican Rep. Mike Johnson of Louisiana about his efforts to assist then-President Donald Trump’s efforts to challenge the results of the 2020 election. Johnson emailed fellow Republicans asking them to sign an amicus brief supporting a lawsuit by Texas against four states seeking to invalidate their electoral college votes, CNN reported in 2020.

“It’s — it’s anti-democratic. They are anti-democratic. They simply are. That’s a fact. And they’re anti-free speech,” King sputtered during a panel discussion shortly before Johnson was elected as speaker of the House of Representatives. “They’re anti — they don’t like questions that they don’t like. They don’t want to answer questions that they don’t like. Well, sorry, welcome to America. That’s the great charm of the American experiment, that we ask questions, that people get to ask these questions.”
King attacked then-House Speaker Kevin McCarthy for providing footage of the Jan. 6, 2021, riot at the Capitol building to Tucker Carlson in February.
Scott said she also asked Johnson about aid to Israel and Ukraine in a post on X, formerly known as Twitter, about the incident. President Joe Biden spoke from the Oval Office Thursday night, announcing a request for $100 billion in aid for Israel and Ukraine.
