The principal of Bunnell Elementary School (BES) in Bunnell, Florida, resigned on Thursday after holding an assembly on black students’ low test scores, according to a statement from the school.
BES put principal Donelle Evensen on paid leave after black fourth and fifth-grade students at the school were removed from class in August to attend an assembly discussing their low standardized test scores. The school confirmed Evensen’s resignation in a statement, which also said that the superintendent asked a former BES principal to temporarily fill the position.
“Donelle Evensen, principal at Bunnell Elementary School, has informed Superintendent LaShakia Moore that she is resigning from that post,” the statement reads. “Superintendent Moore has asked former BES principal Marcus Sanfilippo to return to the campus in an interim role.”
A slideshow at the assembly said that black students at the school had been performing below average on standardized tests for the last three years, according to News 6 Orlando.
“The investigation into the assembly at Bunnell Elementary has not been completed as of this morning,” the school statement reads. “Superintendent Moore expects that to be complete this week. Superintendent Moore is in meetings all day and is unavailable for additional comment.”
Bunnell Elementary School did not immediately respond to the Daily Caller News Foundation’s request for comment.
