To my country and all who live here,
I want to start by saying, I love you. I never stopped loving you. Together, we’ve been through thick and thin. We have overcome innumerable obstacles in our quest to fulfill what Mr. Jefferson said all those years ago:
We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable rights, that among them are life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness.
I know it’s been a long, rough journey, but we have achieved a lot. With God as our backbone, we have defeated some of the greatest evils and injustices ever known to humanity. I still love you with all my heart, and I always will.
That being said, those whom you love will occasionally hurt you, whether intentional or not, as only Jesus has ever been perfect and free from wrongdoing. I’ve heard it put this way: “When you care about people, hurt is part of the package.” Lately, however, I have seriously questioned your decisions and the direction you are wanting to go. Please bear with me, as I want to give a brief walkthrough of our journey together.
My goal is to reinvigorate a sense of patriotic passion within you, as well as make you feel a sense of conviction for taking what I, as well as so many of my neighbors, believe is a detrimental path.
A History Lesson
After our revolution – when we defeated the largest and most powerful empire in the world at that time – it was beyond question that God had certainly ordained our existence. General Washington may have made many mistakes, but he knew that prayer was stronger than any flaw he could ever have. When he became president, he and his fellow founders assembled what has been perhaps the greatest document ever to grace the history of humanity, after the Bible: our Constitution.
While it may not be a perfect document, the Constitution has allowed and presented your people with more freedom and justice than any other transcript on earth, after the Bible itself. I know it’s a rather old piece, but if you would ever take the time to read back through it, I’m sure you would find that many of its principles were taken from none other than the Bible. I understand that not all of your founders may have been traditional Christians, but even for those, there can be no denying that even they held true to the principles of Christianity.
Your founders knew how to put injustice on the path to extinction. Take a glance back at one of the greatest evils to ever land on your soil: slavery. Look no further than Washington, Jefferson, and Madison to recall that some of your own founders were complicit in that institution. Even so, they recognized their guilt, and made a way to put an end to slavery’s chains on your soil for good. This started in 1787, when they introduced the Northwest Ordinance. Remember that? It limited slavery to its (then) current locations and prohibited it from extending to the west. Many of your founders – both slaveholding and non-slaveholding – supported it and helped bring it to light.
It Was Not an American Invention
I need to jog your memory a little further, however, on that horrid institution. While slavery was your original abomination, it was not endemic to you. Rather, you inherited a sin that, unfortunately, was a stain on the world. Whether European, Egyptian, Sub-Saharan, Chinese, or Native American, many of Earth’s cultures and races enslaved other humans. Slavery still continues today in various parts of the world, in which many of your own worst critics turn a blind eye to it and continually chastise you for your 150-year-old mistakes.
Fortunately for you, the founders – even those who were guilty of partaking in that dreaded business – paved the way for its annihilation on your soil. Flash forward a few decades, and you’ll find that the crusade against slavery was even stronger. While Abraham Lincoln – remember him? The tall, skinny fellow from Illinois – may not have initiated the Civil War outright to end slavery, he knew it was coming, and he later made strides to see its demise. One of abolition’s best champions, Frederick Douglass, is certainly owed a great tribute there. I’m not sure if you remember, but Mr. Douglass was perhaps one of the greatest and most exemplary statesmen to ever walk through your churches, cities, and towns. Born a slave himself, he even forgave his own master as the man lay on his deathbed, and then parted as his friend.
Together with Lincoln, Douglass was bound and determined to preserve the Union from enemies both foreign and domestic, and especially from those who wished to divide the Union over the preservation of that repugnant institution. It may do you good to remember what Lincoln addressed during one of his debates with his Democratic opponent, Stephen Douglas. Lincoln knew that the founding fathers may not have seen everyone as equal in every respect, and yet, he still admired and defended them. He said,
I think the authors of that notable instrument (Declaration of Independence) intended to include all men. They did not intend to declare all men equal in all respects. They did not mean to say all were equal in color, size, intellect, moral development, or social capacity. They defined with tolerable distinctness in what respects they did consider all men equal – equal in certain inalienable rights, among which are life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. This they said and this they meant. They did not mean to assert the obvious untruth that all were then enjoying that equality, nor yet, that they were about to immediately confer it upon them. In fact, they had no power to confer such a boon. They simply meant to declare the right, so that the enforcement of that right may fall as fast as circumstances should permit. They meant to set up a standard maxim for a free society, which should be familiar to all, and revered by all; constantly looked to, constantly labored for, and even though never perfectly attained, constantly approximated, and thereby constantly spreading and deepening its influence, and augmenting the happiness and value of life to all people of all colors everywhere. The assertion that ‘All men are created equal’ was of no practical use in affecting our separation from Great Britain; and it was placed in the Declaration, not for that, but for future use. It’s authors meant it to be, thank God, it is now proving itself, a stumbling block to those who, in after times, might seek to turn a free people back into the hateful paths of despotism.
When Our Constitutional System Began Being Tested
Put simply, Lincoln knew that the founders acknowledged the worldwide truths of their day, yet put ideas in place that would eventually create an ideal society for everyone, regardless of race. Go forward a few decades, and you’ll see where our constitutional system really began being tested. When the Progressive Era arrived, numerous national figureheads saw fit to bring about a relatively new idea. That being, that your Constitution deserved to change with the changing times. Rather than view it as a solid foundation designed to withstand time, as the founders and Lincoln did, they needed to mold it to fit their personal agendas.
Theodore Roosevelt – most of your people have known him as “Teddy” – was at the forefront of this movement, as was his Democratic opponent, Woodrow Wilson. Although slavery had been over for fifty years, Wilson re-segregated the federal government and showcased the horribly racist film, “Birth of a Nation,” in your own house.
Wilson’s Democratic inheritors didn’t stop there. They continued their unholy crusade of lynching and terrorizing Blacks across the country. You may recall that the 1960s were a large turning point, when civil rights were finally granted to Blacks nationwide. Where you may be mistaken, however, is in thinking that the Democrats suddenly embraced the light. They didn’t. If not for the GOP, the major civil rights acts of the 1960s would not have passed, especially since the Democrats held one of their longest filibusters against the Civil Rights Act of 1964. Today, Democratic oppression is found mainly in your large cities, where progressives keep people of all colors oppressed through horrible economic policies and the false promise of a “free” life. Please, my love, don’t let them continue to deceive you.
Now, let’s talk about the present. I still love you. I doubt that will ever change. I understand that so many people have been violently upset with you after Donald Trump was elected to be the leader of the free world. President Trump has been accused of being everything horrible that one person could possibly be. He has been deemed a racist, despite the fact that he has empowered people of color through tremendous economic policies and placed numerous people of color in positions of power in his administration.
So many people could not understand why thousands upon thousands – especially within the Christian community – could vote for someone who always seemed so rude and pompous. Don’t get me wrong…Donald Trump can certainly be those things. Many people wonder how Christians could elect someone with a past like his, as well as someone who does not care what they say in any given time. My dear, I would like to make something abundantly clear with you. Donald Trump may be pompous and crude at times, but he deeply respects and fights for the Christian community. Whether Trump is a Christian himself is between God and himself.
A Bible Lesson
Let us not forget that some of the Bible’s most prominent figures were those who had a dirty past. King David lusted after another man’s wife, watched her bathe, got her pregnant, and arranged for her husband to die, and yet God used him to write the Book of Psalms, as well as reign over His chosen people. King Solomon idolized everything under the sun except God, only to find out later in life that it was the greatest mistake he could have made. God used that man to write the Book of Proverbs. Then, look at Saul of Tarsus, who persecuted and killed Christians. Let us never forget that, on that trip to Damascus, his life was changed forever. He changed his name to Paul, wrote a large portion of the New Testament, and lived – then died – as one of Christ’s greatest disciples. If God could use David, Solomon, and Paul with their horrible pasts, I see no reason as to why He couldn’t use Donald Trump. While Trump may be far from perfect, he has protected religious freedom, fulfilled the promise of moving the U.S. embassy to Jerusalem, destroyed radical Islamists, revitalized our pre-COVID economy, stood strong in the face of Iran, China, and North Korea, and brought about a sense of peace in the Korean Peninsula. Trump may be rude at times, but have we not been told that actions often speak louder than words?
As of November 7, 2020, it appears as though you have selected Joe Biden to be the next leader of the free world, though judging by his proposed policies and history of voting, I question whether we will soon continue to be referred to under that banner. My dear, it saddens me so deeply that you would vote for someone who represents the dogma of what Republicans have been accused of being, especially over the past four years. You call Donald Trump a racist, yet it was Joe Biden who defended segregationists during the Civil Rights Era. It would also do you good to remember that it was Biden who attended the funeral of Senator Robert Byrd, a former Klansman. My dear, you believed Christine Blasey Ford when she accused Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh of sexual assault from long ago, yet were totally silent when Tara Reade made a consistent allegation against Joe Biden, and even went as far as to defend Biden! When Ford received nearly a million dollars from a book deal which described her alleged incident, she disappeared from the public eye. Reade, on the other hand, has had her story on record since the early 1990s, and her story has been all but completely shunned. I could go on, but I will stop the hypocrisy train for now.
The Future Is Not Certain Yet
My dear, please do not forget that there are currently many lawsuits involving the recent election. Please do not make the mistake of thinking that Biden will be your 46th president, until the election is over in court. After all, you should remember all too well what happened between George W. Bush and Al Gore in 2000.
As I stated earlier, I love you. I’m sure I always will. It hurts me that you have potentially elected someone to your highest office who wants to destroy everything that your unique, Christian, constitutional system has done for the advancements of humanity. At the end of a remarkable speech by Paul Harvey, he gave us one final reminder. Without holding back, he said, “History promises us only this: We will get exactly what we deserve.” Please, my dear, remember who you are, where you have come from, and what you have overcome.
