The fire at a migrant detention center in Mexico that claimed 38 lives is a sober reminder of the ongoing crisis along the southern border.
About 70 men from South and Central America were being held in the migrant facility in Ciudad Juarez, just across the U.S.-Mexico border from El Paso, Texas, when the fire started Monday night inside the facility.
Mexican President Andrés Manuel López Obrador said some of the men staying at the detention center were protesting news that they were going to be deported from Mexico.
“This had to do with a protest that they started after, we assume, they found out that they were going to be deported,” Obrador said, “and as a protest, they put mattresses from the shelter at the door of the shelter, and they set fire to them and they did not imagine that this was going to cause this terrible accident.”
The horrific incident and loss of life draw attention back to the crisis along America’s southern border. Migrants continue to make dangerous journeys, often relying on criminal cartels, to America’s southern border. Since the beginning of fiscal year 2023 on Oct. 1, the Border Patrol has encountered more than 1 million illegal aliens on the border.
On today’s edition of the “Problematic Women” podcast, we explain why so many migrants continue to arrive at the U.S.-Mexico border and what the Biden administration can do to secure it.
Also on today’s show, a new poll finds that American patriotism is down after COVID-19. We assess what the implications could be. Plus, an image of Pope Francis in a puffer jacket goes viral, but it isn’t real. Artificial intelligence, or AI, generated the photo, which has some troubling implications. And as always, we’ll crown our Problematic Woman of the Week!
