Roger Wilkerson, who was charged with the murder of an 80-year-old woman, had been convicted of at least 43 felonies since 2011, according to WRAL Durham.
Wilkerson was out on bond before he was arrested Wednesday and charged with the murder of Nancy Horton in Person County, North Carolina, according to WRAL. Most of his prior convictions were for breaking and entering and larceny, including of firearms.
“It’s sad, but it was a brutal murder,” Person County Sheriff Dewey Jones told WRAL.
Wilkerson and an adolescent who was also charged in the murder entered the house through an open window Monday evening while she was likely still awake, investigators told WRAL.
Police found evidence linking Wilkerson to the murder while executing a search warrant for his home and charged him with possession of a firearm by a felon, carrying a concealed pistol/gun, resisting, delaying or obstructing an officer and several drug-related charges, according to the Person County Sheriff’s Office. “She had made some comments to people about how the weather was nice, and she had left the windows up,” Jones told the outlet. “Some of the family members said she always locked [the windows] at night before she went to bed, so we think, we really believe, that she was still awake. … We were able to recover a lot of physical evidence, and also in Mrs. Horton’s murder case, we have a lot of forensic evidence that was collected.”
