Former President Donald Trump is the candidate who would give the Republican Party the best shot at winning the 2024 presidential election, 37% of Americans said in a new poll.
Asked “which candidate would give Republicans the best chance of winning in 2024,” regardless of their own personal preference, 37% of respondents in a Scott Rasmussen national survey said Trump.
That compares to the 12% who said Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis; 7% chose former South Carolina Gov. Nikki Haley; 6% said former New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie; 5% picked former Vice President Mike Pence; and another 5% chose entrepreneur Vivek Ramaswamy.
Three percent said North Dakota Gov. Doug Burgum, and 2% said Sen. Tim Scott, R-S.C.
On the same topic, 27% of those polled said it’s “not very likely” that someone other than Trump will win the GOP presidential nomination, while 26% said that it is “somewhat likely.” Fifteen percent said it is “not at all likely” that someone other than Trump will win the party’s 2024 nod.
RMG Research Inc. polled 1,000 registered voters Sept. 28-29 with a margin of error of +/- 3.1 percentage points.
The poll came after Wednesday’s GOP primary debate and asked those who followed the debate closely which of the candidates had the best night. Twenty-four percent said the DeSantis had the best night, while 14% said Ramaswamy, 13% chose Haley, 13% picked Burgum, 7% said Christie, 6% chose Pence, and 2% picked Scott.
Twelve percent said that “nobody had a good night,” and 9% were not sure.
When those who followed the debate closely were asked which candidate had the worst night, 24% said Christie, 18% chose Ramaswamy, 14% picked DeSantis, 11% said Pence, 9% chose Haley, 6% said Scott, 6% chose Burgum, 4% picked “nobody had a bad night,” and 8% were not sure.
The Daily Signal reported in August that, according to Rasmussen polling, Trump was widening his lead over the field of Republican rivals with support from 60% of GOP primary voters.
Morning Consult polling released Friday found that support for Trump soared after the primary debate, which Trump did not participate in: 63% of Republican primary voters said they would support Trump for the GOP’s 2024 presidential nomination, compared with 58% who said they supported him shortly before the debate.
