A professor at a private Massachusetts college invited furries, people who dress in animal costumes, to class and made students adopt their own furry identities during an assignment, according to the student newspaper The Torch.

Boston College professor Christopher Polt invited four furries to attend his “Beast Literature” course on Feb. 23 to interact with students who, as part of a class assignment, adopted their own “fursonas” by drawing themselves re-imagined as animals, the Torch reported. The invited guests, dressed in animal costumes, discussed their experience as furries.

Furries are people who enjoy dressing up as animals, according to Cambridge Dictionary. Polt’s Twitter account, which is set to private, self-identifies himself as a furry who is “working to preserve & share furry culture.”

Polt tweeted a photo of two cakes he allegedly made students for all completing the assignment, according to an archived post. The cakes read “sorry for making you furries.”

The professor prefaced the furry visitors in an October 2022 tweet advertising the course. Beast Literature, which is housed in the classical studies department, studies how literature represents animals with human characteristics.

“From Mother Goose’s fairy tales to lolcats, we imagine animals often speaking as we do. But what are we saying when we use animals to talk with and about one another? And what does literature featuring articulate animals say about our attitudes towards humans, animals, and the lines we draw between them?” the course description reads, according to Coursicle. “This course explores ‘beast literature’ in its various forms (fable, comedy, the novel, epic, debate poetry, etc), examining its incarnations through ancient Greece and Rome, Medieval Europe, and the modern world.”

Students allegedly questioned the course on a social media platform, prompting Polt to ask for screenshots of posts about the course so he could see how “people who weren’t in my class are (mis)representing it,” according to an archived Feb. 28 tweet.

“Students thinking I’m a weirdo is nothing new — that’s been my brand since preschool, and I don’t especially care,” he allegedly wrote.

He tweeted on Feb. 27 that the furries visit was “wholesome and positive” and that it was “breathtaking and sad” to see people not in the course categorize it as “degenerate and meaningless,” according to the archived post.

Polt and Boston College did not immediately respond to the Daily Caller News Foundation’s request for comment.
