Carlson’s Patrol during the Guadalcanal Campaign comes to an end. Under the command of General Evans Carlson, Marine Raiders conducted a series of operations on various locations in the Solomon Islands, liberating them from Imperial Japanese control.

Overall, the Guadalcanal Campaign proved to be a turning point for the Pacific Theater during World War II. Other major turning points in the Pacific included the Battles of Midway, Peleliu, Iwo Jima, and Okinawa.

1978 Dianne Feinstein became the first female mayor of San Francisco. A United States Senator from California, Feinstein became the 38th mayor of San Francisco after the murder of George Moscone.
1791 First Sunday paper published. The Observer, a British newspaper became the first newspaper in the world to be published and read on a Sunday.
