Kentucky Senator Mitch McConnell may only be the Minority Leader these days but he has his sights set on the future, and that future involves stopping the Joe Biden agenda.

The senator appears on the radio show of conservative Hugh Hewitt on Monday and made it known that if he regains the leadership position after the 2022 midterm elections it is unlikely that Biden will get any Supreme Court Justice approved, if a position becomes available.

“Well, I think in the middle of a presidential election, if you have a Senate of the opposite party of the president, you have to go back to the 1880s to find the last time a vacancy was filled,” he said after Hewitt asked how he would handle a Supreme Court vacancy this time if he were majority leader, Politico reported.

On Hugh Hewitt’s show, McConnell says it’s “highly unlikely” he’d allow Biden to fill a Supreme Court vacancy in 2024 if he’s majority leader. He also doesn’t commit to allowing a vote on a nominee if a seat opened up in *2023*.

“Well, we’d have to wait and see what happens.”

“So I think it’s highly unlikely. In fact, no, I don’t think either party if it controlled, if it were different from the president, would confirm a Supreme Court nominee in the middle of an election. What was different in 2020 was we were of the same party as the president,” he said.

The senator was referring to the nomination and confirmation of Supreme Court Justice Amy Coney Barrett during the 2020 presidential election season.

This message by McConnell set liberals on Twitter into a frenzy, demanding that Supreme Court Justice Stephen Breyer retire so he can be replaced by Biden.

“Steven Breyer, please do let the door hit your ass on the way out,” New Republic columnist Natalie Shure said.

“The only person alive who thinks a Republican Senate will ever confirm another Democratic president’s Supreme Court nominee is Stephen Breyer,” another Twitter user said.

“A reminder that if Steve Breyer continues to be an asshole and not retire before Dems potentially lose Congress in 2022, it will further solidify a right-wing court for the rest of our lives,” another said.

“Justice Breyer’s signature judicial philosophy of pragmatism will go in the books with a momentous footnote if he does not retire by the end of this month,” Supreme Court columnist for The Economist, Steven Mazie said.

“Conventional wisdom is iffy on whether Breyer is going to retire. For the record, I think he will, right after the final opinions arrive at the end of the month. I’ll eat my reporter’s notebook if he does not,” he said.

This was not the first time recently that Democrats have called on Justice Breyer to retire as they are still smarting from the late Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg being replaced by President Trump.

But just last month several Democrat politicians were more careful in their comments on Justice Breyer.

“I’m not sure that that kind of pressure on Justice Breyer is actually helpful in his decision making,” Democrat Rhode Island Sen. Sheldon Whitehouse, who is on the Senate Judiciary Committee, said. “I don’t know the man well enough, but I know plenty of people whose backs would get up when subjected to that kind of pressure. And it’s certainly plausible.”

California Democrat Sen. Dianne Feinstein said that the retirement of Justice Breyer would be a “great loss.”

“My general belief is, if a person is serving with integrity and working hard and producing for whatever the constituency is, that’s what these jobs are all about,” she said.

But not all Democrats feel the same way. Democratic Rep. Mondaire Jones said that he believes the justice should retire, citing Justice Ginsburg as an example.

“There’s no question that Justice Breyer, for whom I have great respect, should retire at the end of this term,” he said to Cheddar News in an interview in April.

“My goodness: have we not learned our lesson?” he said, referring to Ginsburg’s seat being filled by Donald Trump.
