Recapping How We Got Here

At the end of Avengers: Infinity War, our heroes had lost. Thanos, the mad Titan, had collected all of the infinity stones after much struggle. During this process, Thanos personally kills Loki, Gamora, and Vision. Wielding the Infinity Gauntlet, he snapped his fingers, erasing half of all life in the universe. Our two teams lost many beloved heroes to the snap. Among these were Dr. Strange, Black Panther, and Spider Man. Strange had previously remarked to Iron Man that, out of several-million possible outcomes, only one resulted in an Avengers’ victory. Thanos, having succeeded, settles on a remote planet.

Reviewing the Movie

Avengers: Endgame serves its fans well. Picking up shortly after Infinity War, the movie starts with Tony Stark and Nebula, the only remaining two of one group. Stranded in space and on the verge of death, they are rescued by Carol Danvers, aka Captain Marvel. Upon reaching Earth, they reunite with their remaining comrades. After discussing a plan of attack, the team travels to Titan, where they exact revenge on Thanos. Thor, recalling a line from Thanos in Infinity War, proceeds to cut off the head of Thanos with his axe, Stormbreaker. While their fallen comrades may have been avenged, the damage that Thanos had caused was not undone.

Five years pass, with society trying to move on. Clint Barton, aka Hawkeye, has become a vigilante. He pursues criminal gangs and kills them. Scott Lang, aka Ant Man, escapes from being trapped in the Quantum Realm. This reality, existing seemingly in its own dimensional pocket, provides gateways to other periods in time. The catch? Someone gone for five years in the Quantum Realm may have only been gone for five seconds in current time. Using his knowledge of the Quantum Realm, Lang convinces the others that time travel is possible. From here, the plot revolves around the Avengers traveling to certain points in their past to secure the infinity stones. Through this effort, they hope to restore all lost life to the universe.

How Time Travel Honors the Fan Base

If anything, Avengers: Endgame is largely a walk down memory Lane. Several of our heroes return to New York City in 2012. Marvel fans remember this well as the setting for our Avengers’ first primary battle as a team. Loki, in an effort to conquer Earth, unleashes Thanos’s army in New York. After a harsh struggle, New York is saved and Loki is captured. In Endgame, Hulk travels to the Sanctum during the battle. Though five years must pass for Dr. Strange to arrive on the scene, Banner convinces the Master of the Mystic Arts to hand over the Time Stone. In Stark Tower, Stark and Lang take the Tesseract from the 2012 Avengers team, who have just captured Loki. In a spectacular fight scene, Steve Rogers, aka Captain America, meets his 2012 self, and the two lash it out.

On Asgard, Thor temporarily reunites with his mother, who has been deceased for several years. Following a few heartfelt moments, he and Rocket depart. Stark and Rogers travel to a US military base several decades after World War II. In fact, it is Rogers’ old training base. In a truly wonderful scene, Tony Stark meets his father, a young Howard Stark. With Howard Stark unaware that he is conversing with his son, Tony Stark is able to assure his father that future events will turn out fine. Son hugs father and they depart. Also present at the base was Hank Pym, the mentor of Scott Lang.

Meanwhile, Thanos unexpectedly captures Nebula in 2014. Thanos learns of future events and develops a new mission. This new task consists of Thanos traveling to the present and acquiring the stones once again. On Vormir, where the Soul Stone is acquired, Natasha Romanoff, aka Black Widow, sacrifices herself. Upon her death, Hawkeye receives the Soul Stone.

Back in the present, the Avengers mourn Romanoff’s death. Following this, Hulk uses Stark’s iron gauntlet, complete with the stones, to resurrect the life that was vanished in the snap. Although successful, Thanos has now traveled through the Quantum Realm with his army to the present.

A Great Ending to an Era

With Thanos back in the game, a battle that does fans justice begins to ensue. Rogers, Stark, and Thor take on Thanos in a fight which can only be described as incredible. With a double-edged sword, Thanos seems unbeatable. Just when all hope seems to be lost, Rogers receives a voice transmission. A familiar voice. One of his best friends. Sam Wilson, aka Falcon, informs Rogers that he is incoming.

Avengers: Endgame is largely a walk down memory lane.

Avengers: Endgame is largely a walk down “Memory Lane.”

A portal opens, revealing Wilson, Black Panther, Dr. Strange, Spider Man, and the other Avengers who disappeared. With them is an army of warriors from various locations, including Asgard, Wakanda, and other places. Captain Marvel returns from space and destroys Thanos’s ship. After a brutal battle, Thanos has once again acquired the stones. On the verge of snapping his fingers, Marvel temporarily halts him, and he loses control of the gauntlet. Stark, now wearing the gauntlet, snaps his fingers, forever purging the universe of Thanos and his army.

An Honorable Death and a Changed Past

Stark wiped Thanos from existence, but the force of his snap proved lethal. In his last moments, he said goodbye to his wife, Pepper Pots. At funeral held at his house, all of the Avengers say a final goodbye. Not long after, Rogers volunteers to return the stones to their proper locations via the Quantum Realm. After not returning when expected, Wilson notices a man sitting on a bench, overlooking a lake. He approaches and realizes it’s Rogers, now an elderly man. Rogers reveals that, following his returning of the stones, he decided to stay in the past and live a normal life with Peggy Carter, his lover. In a final heartwarming moment, he passes his shield to Wilson.

Conclusion

Avengers: Endgame was truly a masterpiece. It served as a revisitation of pleasant memories for many fans. Though it ended several primary plots, it opened the door for many others. The implication is that Wilson becomes the new Captain America. Thor joins the Guardians of the Galaxy. These are just two possible future plot lines.

Personally, a big thank you goes to all who helped develop this masterpiece. Stan Lee would be proud of this culmination of his life’s work. Fans salute your work.
